Efficient & Effective

Traditional metal braces have been around for a long time. They’re probably the most recognizable symbol of orthodontics throughout the Black Hills area of South Dakota.

These orthodontic stalwarts have a long history of successful treatments and are great at treating most oral issues. At Rapid City Orthodontics, we use self-ligating braces which eliminate the need for elastic o-rings.

These metal braces continue to be the most frequently chosen orthodontic treatment for patients of all ages and, thanks to our self-ligating braces, you may even require fewer officer visits compared to traditional metal braces.

Metal braces are a cost-effective option because they don’t require some of the more complex technology or expensive equipment that newer treatments do.

Gone are the days of painful, bulky braces and huge, scratchy brackets. Modern braces are smaller, more comfortable, and more attractive than ever before. Metal braces are built from high-grade stainless steel and are the most common type of braces you’ll see.

Brackets are bonded to the front of each tooth and connected to one another by an archwire, helping to guide your teeth where Dr. Hudson needs them to move.

What Are Braces Made of?

Brackets

The brackets Dr. Hudson uses are durable, non-toxic, and made from a mix of stainless steel, nickel, and other metals.

Brackets have little hooks or doors where Dr. Hudson will thread a wire. The bracket can then be secured by closing the door or by placing an elastic band over the top of the wire.

Glue

This is what Dr. Hudson will use to attach the brackets to your teeth.

It’s common practice to attach the bracket directly to the tooth with glue.

Wire

This thin piece of metal runs from one bracket to another. Dr. Hudson will change the shape and curvature of the wire to move your teeth in the right direction.

In most cases, the wire will attach all of your bottom or upper teeth together. We might occasionally cut the wire if connecting just a few teeth is better for your treatment plan.

Orthodontic Bands

These are stainless steel rings that are cemented to your teeth using dental bonding agents. These bands can provide an anchor for your braces and orthodontic appliances, but they are not used for everyone. At your initial consultation, Dr. Hudson will determine if your treatment will benefit from orthodontic bands or not.

Spacers

These small elastic “donuts” or rings can be used by Dr. Hudson to create space in between your teeth when needed, typically before bands are placed. They’re also referred to as separators.
